Ben Stokes secured his place in cricket folklore with some legendary performances - namely his innings for England in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, and his his heroics at Headingley later in the same summer.

\n

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, he was part of the England Under-19 squad for the 2009 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup and made his debut for Durham the same year.

\n

He was chosen for the England Lions and played against Sri Lanka in 2011, then debuted for England against Ireland later that year.

\n

His next opportunity for England came in 2013, when he was named in the one-day international squad for a series against Ireland and Australia, before being included in the squad for the 2013-14 Ashes tour where he impressed with a century and a five-wicket haul in his first Test series.

\n

Stokes' Test best was a whirlwind 258 against South Africa in 2016 which was the second-fastest Test double ton in history.

\n

Stokes had missed the 2018-19 Ashes tour of Australia after facing court following a brawl outside a Bristol nightclub - later aquitted of assault charges. The allrounder was elevated to England Test captain following their Ashes defeat in 2021-22, at the same time Kiwi legend Brendon McCullum was installed as coach. That sparked the 'Bazball' revolution where entertainment was the No.1 priority for the side that at times treated Test match innings like T20s.

\n

As captain, Stokes's early declaration at Edbaston in the 2023 Ashes allowed Australia to steal a nailbiting win in a drawn series. In the 2025-26 tour of Australia Stokes' batting strike rate was just 37 as England fell to a 4-1 defeat.

\n

After being ommited for a Test against New Zealand in 2026 for breaking his own curfew rules, Stokes sensationally announced his internaitonal retirement midway through the fourth day of the next Test. He took a wicket the ball after his decision became public, then promoted himself to open the batting blasting 30 off 20 balls before getting out as his side suffered England's first Test series loss at home since 2012.

\n

He left the game as one of only two players to have more than 7,000 Test runs and 250 Test wickets, alongside South Africa's Jaques Kallis. Only Kapil Dev and Ian Botham join them with more than 5,000 Test runs and 250 Test wickets.

\n

Stokes played four matches for Melbourne Renegades in BBL|04.
