The following season his 145 against the famed South African attack scored Australia a consolation victory in the day-night Adelaide Test.
\n
And one of his best knocks came against Pakistan in Dubai in 2018, when his marathon nine-hour, fourth-innings 141 saved the Test for Australia.
\n
Khawaja made a late run for a spot at the 2019 ODI World Cup squad and locked in his place with scores of 104, 91 and 100 in India in consecutive innings. He was Australia's No.3 for the whole tournament but injured his hamstring and was ruled out for the semi-final against England.
\n
Back in the Test side, Khawaja was dropped for the seventh time in his career midway through the 2019 Ashes, seemingly putting a full stop on his time in the Baggy Green.
\n
However, Travis Head contracted Covid during the 2021-22 Ashes series, offering a lifeline for Khawaja ahead of the Sydney Test. The classy left-hander responded in the best possible way, hitting a hundred in both innings in front of his native home crowd.
\n
What followed for the veteran was nothing short of remarkable, churning out centuries at home, in Pakistan, India and England, and being a member of the Australian XI that claimed the World Test Championship mace in June 2023.
\n
The 2025-26 Ashes series proved tumultuous for the left-hander, back spasms preventing him from taking his place as an opening batter in the Perth Test and ruling him out of the second match at the Gabba. He was dropped from the XI for the third Test then sensationally recalled on the morning of the match when Steve Smith was ruled out with injury, and held his spot for the remainder of the series, announcing the 2026 Sydney Test would mark his international retirement.
","nationality":"Australia","localClub":"Valley District Cricket Club","instagramUrl":"","twitterUrl":"https://twitter.com/Uz_Khawaja","tiktokUrl":"","snapChatUrl":"","gender":"Men","bblShirtNumber":"1","playerDetails":[{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"ODI","gameType":"ODI","debutDate":"11/01/2013","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-odi.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"NonAccreditedODI","gameType":"Non Accredited ODI","debutDate":"11/01/2013","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-odi.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"T20International","gameType":"T20 International","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-t20i.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"Test","gameType":"Test","debutDate":"03/01/2011","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-test.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"NonAccreditedTest","gameType":"Non Accredited Test","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-test.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"FirstClassDomestic","gameType":"First Class Domestic","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-shield.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"T20Domestic","gameType":"T20 Domestic","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-bbl.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"OneDayDomestic","gameType":"One Day Domestic","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-odd.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"NonAccreditedT20","gameType":"Non Accredited T20","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-bbl.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"YouthODI","gameType":"Youth ODI","debutDate":"11/01/2013","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-odi.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"YouthOneDayNonOfficial","gameType":"Youth One Day (non-official)","debutDate":"11/01/2013","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-odi.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"YouthT20","gameType":"Youth T20","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-t20i.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"YouthTwenty20NonOfficial","gameType":"Youth Twenty20 (non-official)","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-t20i.png"},{"playerId":287,"gameTypeId":"T10","gameType":"T10","debutDate":"","imageUrl":"https://static-files.cricket-australia.pulselive.com/headshots/287-t20i.png"}],"isActive":true,"sitecoreShortGUID":"S4wU78F-4UGtppyhw_lg3w","updateFeedId":"24249360"}],"responseError":false}
